Five Ways to Show Your Website Some Love in 2024

Your website is your business card, resume, 24/7 salesperson and more, all rolled up into one. It can work so hard for you, giving your audience a welcome mat into your world and helping them connect with you.

So, needless to say, it can do a lot! But what if your website isn’t working for you? What if you’re finding a disconnect between your visitors and people who actually reach out?

It’s time to give your website some love. Here are five ways you can do that today!

1. Make it skimmable

Listen, we’re all really busy…we’re business owners, professionals, parents, people who want to have an active social life, etc. etc. etc.

Who’s got time for reading? No one!

I know…that’s tough to hear, especially because we spend so much time poring over every word and every turn of phrase.

Who’s got time for skimming? Everyone!

So make your website skimmable. How do we do that?

Use the inverted pyramid of importance! What’s that?

Your most pressing information goes at the top and the information becomes less “need to know” and more “nice to know” as you go through.

For example, say you are a law firm. What your audience needs to know right away is that:

a) you are a law firm

b) if you practice a certain area of law and can help them.

They don’t need to know how long you’ve been practicing, where you went to law school, etc. etc. They don’t even really need to know where your office is yet – that can come later.

2. Make your CTA (Calls to Action) clear

My dad is not a dancer. I love him, but he’s really not a dancer.

So imagine my surprise when I git engaged, and he asked me repeatedly if “the cha-cha real smooth song” was on the song list for our DJ. Of course – what is a wedding without the Cha Cha Slide?

He loves that song because it tells him what to do. Even a non-dancer can slide to the left and give one hop this time.

That’s what your calls to action should be like. Very clear. Click here. You will get this thing. It will take you to this page. Make it really obvious.

3. Cut. Cut. Cut some more.

There’s a time and a place for a full manifesto of your value. Your website is not that time or place.

As much as I love words, the fewer you have on your website, the better!

For SEO purposes, you really only need 300 words on a page (which is less than this blog). And don’t feel like you have to give your audience the full story, the Alpha to Omega, A to Z of everything they need to know.

All you need to do is give them enough information to take the next step (i.e. book a call with you!)

4. Be specific and honest.

It is actually not that hard to write generic content. That’s why AI can do it.

Look at your site and see if it’s speaking to a specific audience.  The more specific you can get, the better. (And this may be something that changes over the time – that’s the great and frustrating thing about your website. It’s never actually done.)

Also, make sure you’re being honest. Are you really innovative? Cutting-edge? Best-in-class?

It’s okay that you want to make yourself sound great – because you are – but we’ve seen SO many people talk about being a game-changer that we’re a little numb to it. After all, if everyone is taking it to the next level, is anyone really taking it to the next level?

So how can you do that? How can you showcase your value without picking an overused term out of a bag of adjectives?

Talk about results.

So instead of saying that your coaching is taking businesses to the next level, talk about how it’s personalized to get to the root of someone’s challenges.

5. Get a second set of eyes on it.

The hard thing about our websites (and our businesses, for that matter) is that we are sometimes too close to them.

So get someone else to take a look – whether it’s your business bestie, a friend, etc. – to see what they think of your site.

They can look at it objectively and give you some ideas on what is working for them and what isn’t.

Give your website a little love and create copy that converts

Yes – editing and updating your website takes time.

BUT it’s worth it. A well-thought-out website is a powerful tool that just keeps giving. And if you want to talk about your website, let’s have a chat!

So, invest the time and effort to give your website the love it deserves, and watch as it becomes a key driver in achieving your business goals.
