Repurpose Your Content with the REFRESH System

Most businesses publish something once and then never look at it again.

That is a terrible idea.

Let’s illustrate it this way. Suppose I make a delicious turkey dinner and end up with a mountain of leftovers. I assume that my family doesn’t want to eat the same meal twice in a row, and so I throw it in the garbage.

What a waste!

What if, instead, I repurposed my turkey into delicious soup, club sandwiches, and even a Thanksgiving-inspired casserole? Much better idea.

So in this article, we’re going to talk about how that “one and done” process is hurting your business, why you should be repurposing your content and how to do so with my REFRESH system.

The Cost of Not Repurposing Your Content

If you are chasing a new idea every day, you are hurting your business.

You Are Stuck in Creation Mode

Creating from scratch takes a lot of time, energy and effort. There are a range of statistics floating around, but most bloggers say it takes between 1 and 4 hours to write a basic 500-word post. Posting on social can take between 10 minutes and an hour. You are running a business, and that business is not being a full-time content creator. And trying to keep up with your actual work and the momentum of constant content will burn you out.

Your Message is Inconsistent

Personally, I struggle with this one. My ADHD-brain is constantly looking for something new and wants to bounce around all over the place. However, when you’re continually jumping from one topic to another, there is no unified story. Your audience does not know what to associate with you, which hurts your brand.

Think about Tim Horton’s (with apologies to my American readers). Tim Horton’s used to be about coffee, pastries and a light lunch menu. Now, it is trying to do everything from flatbreads to fancy lattes. The result? We don’t recognize Tim Horton’s anymore, and it’s hurt their reputation.

Your Visibility Is Lower Than It Needs to Be

Instagram has a shelf life of 24 hours. LinkedIn lasts for a few weeks. Realistically, most of your followers (over 90%!) will miss your content the first time. Not only will they miss out on something valuable (because your content is excellent), but they will also take longer to become leads and customers. Your audience needs to come in contact with your brand 8-12 times before making a purchase. Repurposing your content multiplies the number of touchpoints without multiplying your workload.

Repurposing Your Content Works

There are so many benefits to repurposing your content.

There’s the obvious: you have more content, and you can maintain consistency without burnout. It keeps you showing up, even during busy periods of your business.

But let’s talk about some lesser-known benefits.

You build your authority.

People need repetition, reinforcement and familiarity before they connect the dots. When you repurpose your content, you give them that clarity. You start sounding like someone who knows their topic deeply because you are staying anchored to the same core ideas.

This is especially important if you are growing your business, repositioning yourself, or introducing a new offer. Repurposing helps you shape the narrative around what you do. The more consistent the message, the more confidently your audience will associate you with your expertise.

You become stronger at speaking about what you do.

Practice makes…well, not perfect, but progress. When you explore a concept from several angles, you become really confident talking about it. You become more articulate as you find better examples, smoother explanations, and stronger language.

This carries over into other areas of your business. Your presentations connect with your audience. Your discovery calls feel more natural. You aren’t stumbling over your pitch because you have already explored your message in multiple formats.

You get data that helps you create future content.

Repurposing is a creative practice, but it is also analytical. When you test the same idea in different formats, you finally get usable data. You can see how it performs as a carousel, a reel, a story or a text post. You can identify which angles spark conversation and which ones land quietly. You learn how your audience wants to engage with you.

This process takes the guesswork out of content creation. Instead of throwing ideas into the void and hoping something works, you make informed decisions. You invest your time in formats and angles that actually resonate.

So, we all agree. Repurposing your content is a great idea. But how do you actually do that? That’s where the REFRESH system comes in.

The REFRESH System

The REFRESH system was built out of confusion as to what “Repurposing Content” actually means. If you are taking your Instagram post and putting it on LinkedIn, that’s cross-channel marketing. If you’re taking an old post and posting it again, that’s reposting.

Repurposing is:

  • Changing how you present information
  • Something
  • Something

So let’s REFRESH!

Reimagine

What it is: Changing your content to fit another format or speak to a different audience.

What it looks like: Exploring different delivery styles so your idea reaches new people.

Examples:

  • Turn a blog post into a carousel.

  • Turn a carousel into a short talking reel.

  • Rewrite the idea for beginners, skeptics or decision-makers.

Expand

What it is: Going deeper into one part of your idea.

What it looks like: Breaking down concepts, adding detail or turning a single sentence into a full post.

Examples:

  • Take one paragraph and turn it into a step-by-step.

  • Build a how-to post from a small point in your content.

  • Create a story that illustrates one key insight.

Flip

What it is: Taking the opposite angle or challenging assumptions.

What it looks like: Turning your idea on its head to create clarity or spark attention.

Examples:

  • “Most people think X is the problem. The real problem is Y.”

  • Myth-versus-truth posts.

  • Showing what happens when someone gets it wrong.

Relate

What it is: Connecting your idea to a story, example or metaphor.

What it looks like: Helping your audience see themselves in the example so the idea becomes easier to understand.

Examples:

  • “This reminds me of a client who…”

  • Using a kitchen, gym or travel metaphor to explain a concept (like I did with Tim Horton’s above).

  • Sharing a personal moment that illustrates the point.

Explain

What it is: Explain how your idea fits into the bigger picture.

What it looks like: Connecting your idea to industry trends, shifting behaviour or long-term goals.

Examples:

  • “Here is why this matters in our industry right now.”

  • Linking your idea to a market shift or new trend.

  • Showing how your point fits into a bigger strategy.

Surprise

What it is: Adding something unexpected or counterintuitive.

What it looks like: Sharing twists, bold insights or overlooked truths that make people pause.

Examples:

  • “The part nobody talks about is…”

  • A surprising statistic or data point.

  • A counterintuitive lesson you learned the hard way.

Highlight

What it is: Showing the idea in action.

What it looks like: Sharing proof, results or behind-the-scenes examples.

Examples:

  • A client story or testimonial.

  • A screenshot or peek into your workflow.

  • A before-and-after transformation.

A REFRESH-ing Way to Approach Content

Repurposing your content is not about squeezing more out of less. It is about giving your ideas the space and repetition they need to work. When you use the REFRESH system, you stay consistent, reduce the pressure to create something new every day and build a deeper connection with your audience. Start with one piece of content this week and run it through the seven steps. You will be surprised by how much easier content feels once you stop reinventing everything from scratch.
